Over the weekend, I got to catch up with my friend Sherdon. He gushed about the practical education in Birmingham City University (BCU) where he is currently completing a PHD degree in wind energy. Let me share with you what he has to say about his experience so far.
It’s important to get to know the teaching style of your chosen university. If their ideals are not in line with yours, completing the program might be difficult.
Sherdon likes BCU’s approach in science and engineering. He said that BCU’s looks at how the research can be applied in a everyday life and aid the people. Because of this mindset, actual products are made.
As for learning, Sherdon was used to attending numerous classes in his home country. It’s the complete opposite in BCU. Sherdon spends most of his time in the lab and doing the actual research. With this approach, you’re actually challenged to go through the project.
I’m sure you’re wondering how Sherdon is funding his stay in the UK. Luckily, he was granted a scholarship by the British Council (BC) and department in the Philippines (Department of Science and Technology or DOST). The BC covers the university fees and a portion of the funds needed for his research. DOST, on the other hand, covers travel costs.
The cost of living in Birmingham is not too high. Sherdon has a monthly budget of 500 pounds or around 680 USD.
I asked Sherdon why the UK. He said it is one of the leading countries known for its developments and research on wind energy. In addition, it has a state of the art technology. Plus, language wouldn’t be a problem for him.
To be honest, I’m quite jealous of Sherdon. He’s having a wonderful time in BCU. He said that if given the chance, he would do it all over again.
Sherdon is not only grateful for the experience but also the opportunity to contribute. He believes that finding out sustainable ways of producing energy is the future.
Sherdon is excited to hear from you so don’t hesitate to contact him. Just register here and you’ll find all the details you need.
Good luck and may all your dreams come true!
